German Folk ( *Deutsche Volksmusik*) is a broad genre encompassing traditional and contemporary folk music originating in Germany, Austria, and German-speaking Switzerland. Its roots lie in rural, pre-industrial life, developing from regional songs and dances passed down orally for centuries. Early forms focused on yodeling, ballads recounting historical events or local legends, and instrumental pieces played on instruments like the zither, accordion (particularly the *Steirische Harmonika*), clarinet, and guitar.

Post-WWII saw a commercialization of *Volksmusik*, often leaning towards a polished, sentimental style – sometimes termed *Schlagerfolk*. However, a revival emerged in the 1970s with artists seeking a return to authentic regional styles and incorporating influences from other folk traditions.

Significant figures include Franzl Lang (bavarian yodeling & accordion), Hubert von Goisern (blending folk with rock & reggae), and Oompah bands like those popularized during Oktoberfest celebrations. Albums like Goisern’s *Auf G’scheit’n* (1992) were pivotal in modernizing the genre.
