Zafraan Ensemble will perform at the Konzerthaus Berlin’s Werner-Otto Saal on July 5th, 2026. The ensemble specializes in a contemporary interpretation of maqam music, a system of melodic modes originating in Arabic classical music. Their compositions often blend traditional instrumentation – including instruments like the oud, qanun, and ney – with Western classical arrangements and influences from jazz and electronic music, creating a distinctive sound that bridges cultural boundaries.
The Werner-Otto Saal is the larger of two concert halls within the Konzerthaus Berlin complex. Originally built between 1821 and 1824 to designs by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, it underwent extensive reconstruction following damage during World War II. The hall is renowned for its exceptional acoustics, derived from its horseshoe-shaped design inspired by the Teatro San Carlo in Naples. It features a predominantly neoclassical aesthetic with ornate detailing and a capacity of approximately 1,180 seats. Throughout its history, the Werner-Otto Saal has hosted performances by numerous internationally acclaimed orchestras, soloists, and ensembles across a wide range of musical genres, establishing itself as a significant venue for classical music in Berlin.
