Wynton Marsalis is a trumpeter, composer, educator, and leading advocate of American jazz music. His style is rooted in the traditions of Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and other foundational figures, while also incorporating elements of classical music and exploring diverse musical forms. He’s known for his virtuosity, improvisational skill, and commitment to preserving and expanding the jazz repertoire. Throughout his career, he has won nine Grammy Awards and the Pulitzer Prize for Music.
The Music Center at Strathmore opened in 2003 and is located in North Bethesda, Maryland. It serves as a multi-disciplinary arts center and the cultural hub for Montgomery County, Maryland. The venue features two primary performance spaces: the Concert Hall, designed with acoustic principles inspired by the Musikverein in Vienna, Austria; and the smaller, more intimate Strathmore Mansion.
Strathmore was originally the estate of philanthropist Florence Bahr, who bequeathed her property to Montgomery County with the intention of creating a cultural center. The grounds include a 1900 mansion which hosts smaller performances and events alongside the modern concert hall.
