Architect John Buonaside Papworth intended it to emulate classical Roman bathhouses, incorporating grand architectural features such as Corinthian columns and a large central hall intended for social gatherings alongside medicinal treatments.

Following a period of decline in the 20th century, the building underwent restoration and now functions as a multi-purpose arts and cultural venue hosting concerts, exhibitions, and events.
