Ruigoord is a unique venue located on an artificial island in the Sloterplas lake, west of Amsterdam. Originally intended for housing development in the 1970s, the area was squatted in 1983 by artists and activists. It evolved into a self-governing cultural village focused on artistic expression and alternative lifestyles. Though legally recognized as a cultural institution since 1999, Ruigoord retains its independent spirit and commitment to providing a space for unconventional art forms.

The site is known for its distinctive architecture – buildings constructed from reclaimed materials – and its history as a haven for counterculture movements.
