The orchestra specialises in historically informed performance practice of music from the medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods, frequently utilising period instruments and exploring lesser-known works alongside established repertoire. They are known for a dynamic and engaging approach to early music, aiming to bring historical sounds to life for contemporary audiences.
Sheffield Cathedral, formally The Cathedral Church of St Peter and St Paul, traces its origins back to the Anglo-Saxon period, though the current building largely dates from the 15th and 16th centuries. Initially a parish church, it achieved cathedral status in 1914 following a restructuring of dioceses. Significant architectural features include its prominent west window – one of the largest stained glass windows in Britain – and its impressive perpendicular Gothic style. Throughout its history, the cathedral has undergone several restorations and expansions, most notably in the late 19th and early 20th centuries led by architects J.L. Pearson and G.F. Bodley. The building stands on a site with evidence of earlier religious foundations dating back to the 7th century, linking it to the early Christian history of the region.
