Experience The Brigantes Orchestra live on October 9th
The Brigantes Orchestra will perform a concert at Sheffield Cathedral on October 9th, 2026. The Brigantes Orchestra is a chamber orchestra specialising in historically informed performance practice, focusing primarily on music from the medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods. They aim to recreate the soundscapes of these eras using period instruments or carefully selected modern instruments mirroring their historical counterparts, and research into performance techniques prevalent at the time of composition.
Sheffield Cathedral, officially The Cathedral Church of St Peter and St Paul, has origins dating back to the Anglo-Saxon period, though the current building largely reflects Victorian Gothic Revival architecture completed in 1905 following a major rebuilding project led by J.L. Pearson. Prior to this extensive reconstruction, the site housed a series of churches; a Norman church existed from around 1100, followed by a larger Gothic church begun in the 13th century. Significant remnants of earlier structures are incorporated into the present cathedral, including parts of the medieval walls and tower foundations. The cathedral's architectural features include intricate stone carvings, stained glass windows and a prominent west front with twin towers. It serves as the seat of the Bishop of Sheffield within the Church of England’s Diocese of Sheffield.
