Experience The Brigantes Orchestra live on June 26th
The Brigantes Orchestra will perform a concert at Sheffield Cathedral on June 26, 2026. The Brigantes Orchestra is a chamber orchestra specialising in historically informed performance practice, focusing primarily on music from the Baroque and Classical periods. They are known for utilising period instruments and striving for authentic interpretations of works by composers such as Bach, Handel, and Mozart. The ensemble draws its name from the Brigantes, an ancient British tribe who inhabited the region encompassing modern-day Yorkshire and parts of northern England.
Sheffield Cathedral, officially The Cathedral Church of St Peter and St Paul, has origins dating back to the Anglo-Saxon period, though the current building largely reflects Victorian Gothic Revival architecture completed in 1905 following a major rebuilding project. Prior to this extensive reconstruction, the site housed a medieval church with roots in the 12th century. Notably, the cathedral contains a significant collection of medieval crosses – some of the finest in the country – rescued from various parishes in the Diocese of Sheffield during the Reformation. It serves as the seat of the Bishop of Sheffield and remains an active place of worship alongside its function as a civic and cultural space. The building’s acoustics are considered particularly resonant.
