Formed in 1990, the group originally comprised Ethan Iverson (piano), Reid Anderson (bass), and David King (drums); personnel has shifted over time but maintains a similar stylistic core. Their performances are characterized by energetic improvisation, dynamic interplay, and a willingness to deconstruct traditional jazz structures.

The Dakota opened in 1981 and has become a prominent venue for jazz, blues, world music, and other contemporary genres. Located in downtown Minneapolis, it’s recognized for its intimate setting and high-quality acoustics. Originally founded by Jim Pettersen, the club has hosted numerous internationally renowned musicians throughout its history and continues to be a significant cultural hub within the city's music scene. The venue underwent a major renovation and expansion in 2022 following a fire but has since reopened maintaining its commitment to live musical performance.
