Formed in Buffalo, New York in 1974, Spyro Gyra is known for its vibrant instrumental compositions and energetic live performances, often featuring complex arrangements and improvisational solos. Throughout their career, they have released over 30 albums and consistently maintained a dedicated following.

Yoshi's Oakland, located in Jack London Square, has a long history as a premier jazz and music venue in the Bay Area. Originally founded in Berkeley by Yoshie Akimoto in 1974 as a small sushi restaurant with live music, it quickly gained prominence for showcasing both established and emerging jazz artists. The Oakland location opened in 2007 following the closure of the original Berkeley venue due to redevelopment. Yoshi’s is noted for its intimate setting and high-quality sound system which contribute to an immersive experience for both performers and audiences. It continues to host a diverse range of musical acts beyond jazz including blues, Latin and world music.
