De Bijloke is a historic complex in Ghent originally founded in 1380 as a hospital dedicated to Saint Alexius. For centuries it functioned as a major medical institution within the city. In 2000, after extensive renovations led by Robbrecht en Daem architecten, it was repurposed as a cultural centre. The complex now houses several performance spaces including a large concert hall renowned for its acoustics and historical ambiance. The architecture retains significant elements of its medieval origins alongside modern additions, making it a distinctive venue for diverse artistic disciplines – music, theatre, dance and literature.
