Opened in 1901, it was originally built as the Bechstein Hall, named after the piano manufacturer who funded its construction. It quickly became a favoured recital space for prominent musicians, including Dame Myra Hess who established a series of free lunchtime concerts during World War II which continued for thirty years. The hall is celebrated for its exceptional acoustics and intimate atmosphere, seating approximately 544 people. It remains an independent charitable organization dedicated to promoting live classical music performance and has hosted countless landmark performances throughout its history. The building itself is Grade I listed, preserving its original architectural features.
