Following political changes after World War I, it became known as the Czech National Theatre in Brno (though not formally designated as such). In 1919 it was renamed in honour of playwright Alois Jirásek before adopting its current name in 1920 to commemorate composer Leoš Janáček’s close friend Gustav Mahler.
