Collegium 1704 is a Czech baroque orchestra specializing in historically informed performance practice. The ensemble focuses on music from the late 17th and 18th centuries, particularly composers active in Bohemia and Central Europe, including Jan Dismas Zelenka, Johann Adolf Hasse, and Georg Frideric Handel (who spent time composing in Dresden, near where the ensemble is based). Their performances aim to recreate the sound world of the period using instruments and techniques consistent with baroque musical traditions.
The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Brno is a significant Gothic landmark, often referred to as Jakub Church (James Church) after its dedication to Saint James. Construction began around 1320 and continued over several centuries, resulting in a blend of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architectural styles. Notably, its interior features a unique ossuary discovered during renovations in 2001-2008 – one of the largest in Europe – containing remains from burials around the church spanning centuries. The church tower offers panoramic views of Brno and historically served defensive purposes for the city. Its acoustics are considered favorable for musical performances due to its size and stone construction.
