On September 4th, 2026, a concert featuring the works of Latvian composer Pēteris Vasks will be held at Schloss Mondsee in Mondsee, Austria. Vasks’s compositions are often characterized by a deeply expressive and intensely emotional quality, frequently drawing inspiration from Latvian folklore, nature, and spiritual themes. His musical language blends tonal and atonal elements, incorporating techniques like microtonality and extended instrumental effects. Recurring motifs include bird song and the sounds of the natural world, reflecting his concern for environmental issues. He is considered one of the most important contemporary composers from the Baltic states.
Schloss Mondsee, a baroque palace situated on the northern shore of Lake Mondsee in the Salzkammergut region of Austria, has a history dating back to the 12th century. Originally a Roman fort, it was rebuilt in its current form in the 18th century by Prince Archbishop Firmian of Salzburg. Throughout its history, it served various purposes including as a summer residence for Salzburg’s archbishops and later as a military academy. Today, it functions as a cultural center and event venue hosting concerts, exhibitions and conferences.
