He gained prominence as a session musician and touring member with artists like Santana and Mongo Santamaría, and has led his own ensembles for decades, showcasing his virtuosity on timbales and other percussion instruments. He is also the father of Sheila E., a successful musician in her own right, with whom he frequently collaborates.

Yoshi’s Oakland is a renowned jazz club located in Oakland, California. Originally founded in San Francisco in 1977 by Yoshio “Yoshi” Akiba, it quickly became a vital hub for both established and emerging jazz artists. The club relocated to Jack London Square in Oakland in 2007 after the original venue closed. Yoshi's is known for its intimate setting, excellent acoustics, and commitment to presenting a diverse range of jazz styles alongside Latin music, blues, and other genres.
