His musical career spans decades, beginning with significant contributions to the Latin rock scene in the 1960s with Azteca, and evolving into a prominent role as a bandleader and sideman with artists like Santana, Herbie Hancock, and Mongo Santamaría. Escovedo’s style is characterized by energetic rhythms, intricate polyrhythms, and a strong emphasis on improvisation. He frequently incorporates Afro-Cuban influences alongside contemporary jazz elements.

Yoshi’s Oakland has a long history as a premier jazz club in the Bay Area. Originally founded in 1977 by Yoshiaki “Yoshi” Shibuya, it quickly became renowned for showcasing both established jazz legends and emerging talent. The venue relocated several times before settling into its current location in Jack London Square in 2007.
