Originally constructed during the reign of Emperor Augustus, it was one of the largest Roman theatres and could accommodate approximately 11,000 spectators.

Throughout its history, it served as a space for theatrical performances, musical events, and public gatherings during Roman times. Following periods of disuse and partial ruin, significant restoration efforts began in the 19th century and continue today.
