The Paramount Theatre-Oakland opened in 1931 as a lavish movie palace during the Golden Age of cinema. Designed by architect Marcus M. Porter, it’s noted for its stunning Art Deco interior featuring ornate plasterwork, crystal chandeliers, and a massive Wurlitzer organ—one of the few remaining in its original venue. Originally part of the Paramount Pictures chain, it hosted film premieres and live performances.

Following a period of decline in the 1970s and 80s, the theatre underwent extensive restoration completed in 1973 and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1978.
