Experience Kurt Weill live on April 21st
On April 21, 2027, the Staatstheater Saarbrücken will present a concert dedicated to the works of Kurt Weill. Weill (1900-1950) was a German composer most known for his collaborations with Bertolt Brecht, creating what is often termed “Dreigroschenmusik” – a style blending elements of jazz, cabaret, folk music, and classical forms. His compositions frequently feature sharp dissonances, rhythmic complexity, and a deliberately unsettling quality reflecting the socio-political anxieties of the Weimar Republic and beyond. While initially associated with politically charged “New Music,” Weill later transitioned towards Broadway-style compositions during his exile in the United States.
The Staatstheater Saarbrücken itself has a complex history. Originally founded in 1773 as a court theatre, it underwent several transformations before relocating to its current neo-baroque building in 1939, designed by architect Gottfried Böhm. Heavily damaged during World War II, it was rebuilt and reopened in 1946. Today, the Staatstheater functions as a multi-disciplinary institution encompassing opera, drama, ballet, and concerts.
