Experience Kurt Weill

Kurt Weill (1900-1950) was a German composer, celebrated for his innovative theatrical works that bridged the gap between opera, cabaret, and Broadway. Initially studying with Engelbert Humperdinck, Weill achieved early success with operas like *Der Protagonist* (1925) and *Mahagonny-Songspiel* (1927), showcasing a developing “Neue Sachlichkeit” (New Objectivity) style – stark, realistic, and often satirical.

His most famous collaboration began with Bertolt Brecht, resulting in *The Threepenny Opera* (1928), featuring the iconic “Mack the Knife.” Forced to flee Nazi Germany in 1933 due to his Jewish heritage and political views, Weill emigrated to the United States.

Adapting to a new musical landscape, he found success on Broadway composing scores for *Knickerbocker Holiday* (1938), including “September Song,” and *Lady in the Dark* (1941). Weill’s music is characterized by its rhythmic vitality, harmonic sophistication incorporating jazz influences, and dramatic storytelling.
