Experience Krzysztof Penderecki live on November 18th
On November 18, 2026, the Semperoper Dresden will host a concert dedicated to the works of Krzysztof Penderecki. Penderecki (1933-2020) was a significant figure in 20th and 21st-century classical music, known for his innovative and often dramatic compositions. His early work frequently employed extended instrumental techniques – such as unusual bowing methods for strings and clusters of sound – resulting in textures described as sonorous and intensely expressive. Later periods saw a move towards greater tonal clarity while retaining a distinctive emotional depth, incorporating elements of Polish folk music and religious themes. He composed across numerous genres including symphonies, concertos, operas, and choral works.
The Semperoper itself holds a prominent place in operatic history. Originally constructed in 1841 by Gottfried Semper, it was rebuilt twice following devastating fires (1869 and 1945), with the current building being a reconstruction completed in 1984. The theatre is renowned for its exceptional acoustics and its architectural blend of Baroque Revival and Renaissance styles.
