Kokoroko is a British jazz ensemble recognized for their contemporary take on Afrobeat, blending elements of jazz improvisation with West African rhythms and melodies. Formed in 2016, the group features a core lineup led by saxophonist and composer Sheila Maurice-Grey, and has gained international acclaim for their energetic live performances and distinctive sound, showcased across albums like *Why We Dance* and *My Yout*.

The scheduled performance on July 1st, 2026 will take place at New York City Center, a landmark performing arts venue located in Manhattan. Originally opened in 1943 as a WPA project during the Great Depression, the Center was envisioned as a space for ballet and modern dance – initially housing the New York City Ballet. Throughout its history, New York City Center has hosted a diverse range of performances including opera, musical theater, drama, and concerts.

Notably, it operates under a unique business model; it doesn’t have a resident company but instead presents seasons of engagements by various performing arts groups. The building itself is architecturally significant, representing an Art Deco style prominent in civic buildings of the period.
