Jose Luis Gutiérrez, a prominent figure in the contemporary *son jarocho* revival, will perform at the Mittelsächsisches Theater in Freiberg, Germany on March 5th, 2027. Gutiérrez’s music is rooted in the traditional *son jarocho* of Veracruz, Mexico, but incorporates elements of jazz, classical music, and other global influences. He is particularly known for his virtuosic *jarana* playing – a small, eight-stringed guitar central to the *son jarocho* ensemble – and his innovative arrangements that maintain the genre’s improvisational spirit while expanding its harmonic and rhythmic possibilities.

The Mittelsächsisches Theater, located in Freiberg, Saxony, has a rich history dating back to 1822. Originally built as a combined city theatre and casino, it underwent significant renovations in the late 19th century and again following damage during World War II. Today it functions as a multi-disciplinary theatre offering opera, operetta, musical theatre, plays, concerts and ballet performances.
