Gutiérrez didn't begin formal training until his 30s, initially working as a schoolteacher before dedicating himself fully to music.

He rose to prominence with Los Hijos del Jarocho, a group he co-founded which revitalized *son jarocho* in the 1970s and 80s, bringing it to wider audiences.
