The Festspielhaus Hellerau holds significant historical and architectural importance. Originally constructed in 1925 as a centre for Jean Fuller Maitland’s innovative dance and movement school, it represents an early example of functionalist architecture dedicated to artistic expression. The building was conceived as a “total work of art” (Gesamtkunstwerk), integrating architecture, stagecraft, and performance space. Following periods of varied use including wartime service and later as a technical school, the Festspielhaus underwent extensive restoration beginning in 2006.
