Immanuel Wilkins is a contemporary American jazz saxophonist and composer recognized for his emotionally resonant and harmonically sophisticated approach to the alto saxophone. His music often blends elements of post-bop, free improvisation, and gospel influences, frequently exploring themes of Black American identity, spirituality, and social justice. He gained prominence as a member of the collective Butcher Brown before establishing himself as a bandleader with albums like “Omega” and “The 7.” His compositions are characterized by intricate arrangements, dynamic interplay between musicians, and a deeply personal expressive quality.
SFJAZZ is a non-profit organization dedicated to jazz performance, education, and advocacy. Founded in 1983 by Brent Hayes Edwards, it initially presented concerts in various venues throughout San Francisco. In 2013, SFJAZZ opened its own dedicated performance space, the Robert N. Miner SFJAZZ Center in the city’s SoMa district. This center houses the Betty Wright Swedish Hospital Jazz Club – an 280-seat venue designed specifically for optimal acoustics – along with rehearsal spaces and educational facilities.
