Alpert is widely recognized as a trumpeter, vocalist, and composer, achieving significant commercial success in the 1960s and 70s as the leader of Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass. His music is generally categorized as “easy listening,” though it incorporates influences from jazz, mariachi, and Latin rhythms. Characterized by bright trumpet melodies and sophisticated arrangements, his sound became synonymous with the “California Sound.” Throughout his career, Alpert has earned nine Grammy Awards and fifteen Gold & Platinum records.

The Michigan Theater originally opened in 1928 as a movie palace and performance venue. Designed by C. Howard Crane, it’s noted for its opulent interior featuring a grand lobby and ornate detailing reflecting a blend of various architectural styles including Italian Renaissance and Art Deco. After a period of decline in the mid-20th century, the theater was saved from demolition by a community preservation effort and reopened in 1985 following extensive restoration.
