Gavin Bryars’s music, often described as minimalist and possessing a distinctly lyrical quality, will be presented at the Wortham Theater Center in Houston, Texas on September 20, 2026. Bryars’ compositions frequently blend elements of jazz, classical, and found sounds, often exploring themes of memory and loss. He is particularly known for works like “Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet,” originally based on a fragment of a 19th-century hymn sung by a street preacher. His output includes operas, chamber pieces, and large-scale orchestral works.

The Wortham Theater Center opened in 1987 and serves as the primary performance venue for the Houston Grand Opera and the Houston Ballet. Designed by Rafael Viñoly Architects, the complex comprises two theaters: Alice and George Brown Theatre – home to the opera – and Cullen Theater, used by the ballet and other performing arts groups. The building’s architecture is characterized by its expansive glass-enclosed lobby and distinctive geometric form. It underwent significant repairs following flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey in 2017; renovations focused on waterproofing measures and restoration of damaged areas.
