Classical Concerts in Houston

Experience Gavin Bryars live on September 19th

Gavin Bryars’s compositions often blend minimalist techniques with elements of jazz, historical source material, and a distinctly lyrical quality. His work frequently explores themes of memory, loss, and the beauty found in everyday sounds. He is known for pieces like “Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet,” originally based on a fragment of a 19th-century street preacher’s testimony, and his numerous works for ensembles of varying sizes, including chamber groups, orchestra, and chorus. Bryars' compositional approach often involves layering textures and creating a sense of spaciousness.

The performance will take place at the Wortham Theater Center in Houston, Texas. Opened in 1987, the Wortham is a multi-venue performing arts complex designed by Rafael Viñoly Architects. It primarily houses two performance spaces: the Cullen Theater, a proscenium arch theatre seating approximately 2,400 patrons, and the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts which hosts Broadway shows and other large-scale productions. The building is noted for its distinctive glass-enclosed lobby and its role as home to both the Houston Grand Opera and the Houston Ballet. The architectural design incorporates elements intended to enhance acoustics and provide optimal viewing experiences for audiences.
