Gavin Bryars’s music is characterized by a minimalist aesthetic often incorporating found sounds, literary and historical references, and a generally contemplative mood. Frequently blurring the lines between classical, jazz, and popular music, his compositions explore themes of memory, loss, and the passage of time. He is particularly known for works like “Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet,” originally based on a fragment of a 19th-century hymn sung by a homeless man in London. His compositional output includes operas, orchestral pieces, chamber music, and works for solo instruments.

The performance will take place at the Wortham Theater Center in Houston, Texas. Opened in 1987, the Wortham is a multi-venue performing arts complex comprising two primary performance spaces: Alice and George Neumann Theatre (primarily for ballet and dance) and Cullen Theater (hosting opera, theatre, and other presentations). Designed by Rafael Viñoly Architects, the building is notable for its distinctive glass-enclosed lobby which allows natural light to flood the interior. The center serves as home to both the Houston Grand Opera and the Houston Ballet companies.
