Classical Concerts in Houston

Experience Gavin Bryars live on September 11th

Gavin Bryars’s compositions often blend minimalist techniques with elements of jazz, historical quotation, and a deeply lyrical sensibility. His work frequently explores themes of memory, loss, and the beauty found in everyday sounds. He is known for pieces like *Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet*, originally discovered on a damaged 1970s tape and developed into a widely recognized choral work, and his numerous operas and chamber pieces. Bryars’s style is characterized by harmonic simplicity, gradual textural development, and a focus on timbral exploration.

The performance will take place at the Wortham Theater Center in Houston, Texas. Opened in 1987, the Wortham is a multi-venue performing arts complex designed by Rafael Viñoly Architects. It primarily hosts performances by the Houston Grand Opera, the Houston Ballet, and the Houston Symphony. The complex consists of two main halls: Alice and George Brown Hall (primarily for opera and ballet) and Jesse H. Jones Hall for the Performing Arts (home to the Symphony). The building's design incorporates significant public art installations and features a large central lobby space intended to encourage community engagement with the arts.
