On January 17, 2027, Clärchens Ballhaus in Berlin will host a concert dedicated to the works of Erich Wolfgang Korngold. Korngold (1897-1957) was an Austrian-American composer known for his lush, romantic musical style. Initially celebrated for his operas in the early 20th century, he transitioned to composing film scores during his time in Hollywood, significantly influencing the “Golden Age” of cinema. His music is characterized by late-Romantic harmonies, soaring melodies, and a distinctly lyrical quality, often incorporating elements of Viennese waltz tradition alongside dramatic orchestral writing. While initially dismissed by some as overly sentimental, Korngold’s work has experienced a significant revival in recent decades, appreciated for its craftsmanship and emotional depth.

Clärchens Ballhaus holds a unique position in Berlin's cultural landscape. Opened in 1913, it originally functioned as a dance school and ballroom. Throughout its history it has served various purposes – briefly as a detention center during WWII and later as a popular dance venue for both West Berliners and East Berliners during the city’s division.
