Bobby McFerrin is renowned for his a cappella work, pioneering vocal improvisation and blending jazz, folk, and classical influences. His music frequently features complex vocal layering, rhythmic experimentation, and often incorporates audience participation. He gained international recognition with his 1988 hit “Don’t Worry, Be Happy,” but his career spans decades of innovative vocal performance and composition encompassing both solo work and collaborations across genres.

The Freight, located in Berkeley, California, has been a significant venue for traditional and contemporary folk, blues, jazz, and world music since 1968. Originally founded as a listening room emphasizing acoustic music, it quickly became a central hub for the Bay Area’s burgeoning folk scene during the 1960s. Over the years it hosted prominent artists such as Joan Baez, Taj Mahal and John Lee Hooker.

In 1972 The Freight moved to its current location on Addison Street. It operates as a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting live music and fostering a community around diverse musical traditions. The venue is known for its intimate atmosphere and excellent acoustics, prioritizing artist visibility and audience connection.
