Classical Concerts in City of Edinburgh

Experience Berlin Philharmonic live on August 30th

The Berlin Philharmonic will perform at Usher Hall in Edinburgh on August 30, 2026. The orchestra is internationally renowned for its distinctive sound, characterized by a rich tonal palette, precision, and a historically informed approach to interpretation. While capable of performing works across all periods, the Berlin Philharmonic has a strong association with the German Romantic tradition, frequently interpreting composers like Wagner, Brahms, and Mahler with particular depth. The orchestra’s history dates back to 1882, evolving from a previously existing ensemble and achieving global prominence under conductors such as Wilhelm Furtwängler and Herbert von Karajan.

Usher Hall, opened in 1897, is Edinburgh’s principal concert hall and a significant landmark in the city. Designed by Robert Rowand Anderson, it is celebrated for its excellent acoustics and ornate Victorian architecture. Initially conceived as part of the city's improvement scheme following the Industrial Revolution, Usher Hall was gifted to the city by Andrew Usher, a local brewer. Throughout its history, it has hosted a diverse range of performances including classical music concerts, choral events, jazz performances and political gatherings.
