Originally a chapel of ease to the Parish Church of Wigan, it became a parish church in its own right in 1848. The building is constructed primarily of sandstone and features a prominent west tower with a peal of eight bells dating from 1902 by John Warner & Sons. Architectural details include lancet windows and a largely unaltered Victorian interior, making it a Grade II listed building recognized for its historical and architectural importance within the region. The church continues to serve as an active place of worship within the Diocese of Liverpool.
