Animal Collective is an American experimental pop band formed in Providence, Rhode Island in 2000. Originally a four-member group – Avey Tare (David Portner), Panda Bear (Noah Lennox), Deakin (Josh Dibb), and Geologist (Brian Weitz) – their lineup has shifted over time, though the core remains Portner and Lennox. They rose to prominence in the early 2000s within the burgeoning freak folk scene before evolving into a highly influential force in psychedelic pop and electronic music.
Early albums like *Spirit They’ve Gone Missing* (2004) showcased lo-fi, sample-based experimentation. Their breakthrough came with *Merriweather Post Pavilion* (2009), a critically acclaimed album lauded for its vibrant textures, complex rhythms, and euphoric melodies. Subsequent releases, including *Centipede Hz* (2012) and *Painting With* (2016), continued to push boundaries while maintaining accessibility.
