Piano music, as a genre, isn’t strictly defined *by* instrumentation alone, but rather by the focus on the piano as the primary expressive voice. Its origins trace back to the instrument’s development in the early 18th century, blossoming with composers like Domenico Scarlatti and Muzio Clementi who explored its technical capabilities. Early characteristics included sonatas, concertos, and variations – showcasing virtuosity and harmonic complexity.

The Romantic era (19th century) saw piano music explode in popularity with figures like Frédéric Chopin (Nocturnes, Études), Franz Liszt (Hungarian Rhapsodies), and Robert Schumann (Kinderszenen). This period emphasized emotional depth and programmatic storytelling.
