Justus Friedrich Eichhorn (1775-1854) was a significant, though often overlooked, German composer, organist, and music theorist bridging the Classical and Romantic periods. Initially employed as a church musician in various Thuringian towns – including Weimar and Sondershausen – Eichhorn’s career blossomed with his 1800 appointment as Kapellmeister to the Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. He later became Generalmusikdirektor there in 1812, a position he held for decades.

Eichhorn’s compositional output was prolific, encompassing operas (including *Roland und die Ritter*, considered an early example of German Romantic opera), symphonies, concertos (particularly for organ), choral works, and numerous songs. His style blends Haydnesque clarity with emerging Romantic expressiveness; his music is characterized by melodic invention and skillful counterpoint.

Notably, Eichhorn was a pioneer in *Gesangvereine* (choral societies), founding one of the first in Germany which significantly impacted the development of amateur choral singing. Felix Mendelssohn greatly admired Eichhorn's work and actively promoted performances of it.
