Originating with artists reacting against perceived societal structures and embracing a dystopian aesthetic, it’s characterized by heavily processed field recordings, rhythmic noise, minimalist compositions, and often a deliberate rejection of traditional musical structure.

Early pioneers like SPK (Australia) with albums like “Leichenschrei” (1983) and NON (Boyd Rice, USA) were foundational. Cabaret Voltaire (UK), though broader in scope, incorporated significant industrial soundscapes. Later developments saw a blending with techno and electronic body music (EBM), influencing acts like Einstürzende Neubauten whose use of scrap metal became iconic.

While never mainstream, Industries & Professions significantly impacted sound design for film and theatre, inspiring techniques for creating unsettling atmospheres. Its influence extends to noise music, power electronics, and even elements within contemporary experimental electronic music.
