The origins of deep house can be traced back to the early days of house music in Chicago. DJs such as Larry Heard (also known as Mr. Fingers), Frankie Knuckles, and Ron Hardy played a significant role in shaping the genre. They incorporated more melodic and soulful elements into their sets compared to the high-energy disco-influenced tracks that were popular at the time.

Key characteristics of deep house include its emphasis on mood and atmosphere rather than just a focus on dancefloor energy. The tempo is usually slower than other genres of electronic music, ranging from 110 to 130 beats per minute. The use of rich harmonies, warm pads, and smooth chord progressions creates a relaxing and introspective vibe.

Over time, deep house has evolved and branched out into various subgenres such as tech-house, progressive house, and future house. These subgenres incorporate different elements while still maintaining the core characteristics of deep house.

Several artists have made significant contributions to the development of deep house. Larry Heard's album "Can You Feel It" released under his Mr. Fingers alias in 1986 is considered one of the pioneering records in the genre. It featured tracks like "Mystery Of Love" that showcased the soulful vocals and dreamy atmospheres characteristic of deep house.

Another influential artist in the genre is Kerri Chandler from New Jersey who became known for his unique blend of deep house with garage influences. His track "Atmosphere" released in 1993 became an anthem for many deep house enthusiasts.
