Background Jazz is a genre of music that originated in the early 20th century and has since evolved into a popular style of jazz known for its soothing and relaxing qualities. It is often played as background music in various settings, such as restaurants, hotels, and lounges.

The origins of Background Jazz can be traced back to the birth of jazz itself in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Jazz emerged primarily from African American communities in New Orleans, Louisiana, blending elements of ragtime, blues, and European musical traditions. As jazz gained popularity, it began to branch out into different subgenres, including Background Jazz.

Key characteristics of Background Jazz include smooth melodies, mellow rhythms, and an emphasis on improvisation. The tempo is usually slower compared to other jazz styles like bebop or swing. The instrumentation typically includes piano, saxophone, trumpet, bass guitar or double bass, and drums. Vocals are also common but not always present.

Over time, Background Jazz has evolved alongside other jazz subgenres. In the 1950s and 1960s, artists like Miles Davis and John Coltrane incorporated elements of modal jazz into their compositions. This brought a more contemplative and atmospheric quality to Background Jazz.

In the 1970s and 1980s, the rise of fusion jazz further influenced Background Jazz. Artists like Herbie Hancock experimented with incorporating electronic instruments and synthesizers into their music while still maintaining the relaxed vibe associated with the genre.

Significant artists associated with Background Jazz include Bill Evans, Stan Getz, Chet Baker, and Diana Krall. Bill Evans' album "Sunday at the Village Vanguard" is considered a classic example of this genre due to its introspective piano playing accompanied by a subtle rhythm section.
