Yasmin Williams is a contemporary acoustic fingerstyle guitarist known for incorporating percussive techniques and extended range instrumentation into her compositions. Her music blends elements of folk, jazz, hip-hop, and classical music, often featuring alternate tunings and utilizing the guitar as a multi-instrumental soundscape. She frequently employs looping and effects pedals to create complex arrangements despite performing solo. Williams gained prominence through self-released recordings and online videos showcasing her innovative playing style, eventually leading to releases on Spinster Records.
Greensboro, North Carolina, holds significant historical weight as a pivotal location in the American Civil Rights Movement. The Greensboro sit-ins of February 1st, 1960, at the Woolworth’s lunch counter – now part of the International Civil Rights Center & Museum – sparked widespread nonviolent protests against segregation across the South. Prior to this event, Greensboro developed as a textile manufacturing hub following the arrival of railroads in the mid-19th century. The city is currently home to several universities including the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (the largest historically Black university in NC), and Guilford College contributing to a diverse population and cultural scene.
