Marian Anderson Hall, formerly known as the Philadelphia Academy of Music’s North Broad Street home, underwent extensive renovations completed in 2023 and was renamed in honor of Marian Anderson in December 2023. Anderson was a celebrated contralto who faced racial discrimination but ultimately achieved international acclaim, becoming the first African American to perform with the Metropolitan Opera in 1955. The hall itself has a rich history dating back to its original construction in 1857; it is noted for its exceptional acoustics and ornate Victorian architecture.
