Experience West-Eastern Divan Orchestra live on September 17th
The West-Eastern Divan Orchestra will perform at the Opernhaus Dortmund on September 17, 2026. Founded in 1999 by Daniel Barenboim and Edward Said, the orchestra is comprised of young musicians from Israel, Palestine, and several Arab nations. Their repertoire broadly encompasses classical music from various periods – Baroque through contemporary – with a particular focus on works that promote dialogue and understanding across cultures. The orchestra frequently performs pieces by composers reflecting Middle Eastern musical traditions alongside core European classical works, often commissioning new compositions as well.
The Opernhaus Dortmund opened in 1964 after its predecessor was destroyed during World War II. Designed by architect Paul Rittinghausen, it’s a prominent example of post-war German architecture, noted for its functional design and relatively modest exterior compared to some grander opera houses. The building underwent extensive renovation between 2007 and 2010, modernizing technical facilities while preserving its original architectural character. It serves as the home venue for Oper Dortmund (Dortmund Opera) and also hosts orchestral concerts and ballet performances, playing a significant role in the cultural life of the Ruhr region.
