The WDR Symphony Orchestra will perform at the Opernhaus Dortmund on May 29, 2027. The orchestra is renowned for its versatile repertoire, encompassing a broad range of musical periods from Baroque to contemporary works, with a particular focus on German Romanticism and 20th/21st-century compositions. It frequently commissions new pieces and collaborates with leading contemporary composers. Historically rooted in radio broadcasting – originally established as the “Symphonieorchester des Westdeutschen Rundfunks” – the orchestra maintains a strong tradition of recording and broadcast performance alongside its concert hall appearances.

The Opernhaus Dortmund opened in 1964, designed by architect Paul Rittinghaus. It is notable for its modernist architectural style, diverging from traditional opera house designs with a focus on functional acoustics and clear sightlines. The building underwent extensive renovation between 2007 and 2010, modernizing technical facilities while preserving its original architectural integrity. As a significant cultural venue in North Rhine-Westphalia, the Opernhaus Dortmund hosts not only opera performances but also ballet, concerts, and other theatrical events.
