Originally established in the 17th century as a hospital (hospice) for the poor and vulnerable – a “folie” referencing both its charitable purpose and the then-common association of asylums with eccentric behaviour – the building underwent various transformations over the centuries. It functioned as a workhouse before falling into disuse.

Restored in the late 20th century, it now functions as a centre dedicated to artistic creation and performance, hosting a diverse program encompassing music, theatre, dance, and visual arts.
