The Vienna Philharmonic will perform at The Carolina in Charlotte, North Carolina on December 21, 2026. The orchestra is renowned for its distinctive warm, richly textured sound, deeply rooted in the classical traditions of composers like Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms. However, their repertoire extends to encompass works from the Baroque period through contemporary compositions. Uniquely, the orchestra operates as a self-governing body; musicians make artistic decisions collectively.
The Carolina opened in 1927 as the Carolina Theatre, initially a movie palace designed in a lavish Italian Renaissance style by architect C. C. Petty. It operated primarily as a cinema for several decades, hosting numerous premieres and becoming a local landmark. In 2021, following extensive renovations led by Barton Myers Associates, it reopened as a multi-purpose performing arts venue while retaining much of its original architectural grandeur. The restoration aimed to modernize facilities for live performances—including concerts, Broadway shows and other events—while preserving the theatre’s historic aesthetic details like ornate plasterwork and a grand lobby space. The venue currently has a seating capacity of approximately 700.
