Originally opened in 1974 by brothers Harry and Lonnie Sciambra, it was initially conceived as a venue to showcase the music of Professor Longhair, a prominent New Orleans rhythm and blues pianist who had difficulty finding consistent performance spaces. The name “Tipitina’s” itself comes from a song by Professor Longhair.

Over the decades, Tipitina's has become renowned as a cornerstone of the local music scene and a nationally respected concert hall.
