Jazz Concerts in York
Experience Tim Garland live on October 12th
Tim Garland will perform at the National Centre for Early Music (NCEM) in York on October 12, 2026. Garland is a British saxophonist, composer, and arranger known for a highly individual style blending jazz improvisation with elements of classical music, folk traditions – particularly from Northern Europe – and contemporary soundscapes. His work frequently features complex harmonies, rhythmic interplay, and a focus on melodic development, often incorporating extended techniques on the saxophone. He has collaborated extensively with artists across genres and leads several ensembles including the Tim Garland Ensemble and the Beacon Quartet.
The NCEM occupies St Margaret’s Church, a historic building dating back to the 15th century. Originally a parish church, it was adapted in the 1960s to become dedicated to the performance and study of early music. The venue is renowned for its exceptional acoustics, particularly suited to unamplified sound, and hosts a diverse programme encompassing medieval, Renaissance and Baroque music alongside contemporary works informed by historical performance practice. It serves as a national resource for early music research and education, supporting musicians and scholars through residencies and workshops. The building's architecture contributes significantly to its unique atmosphere as a concert space.
